Leaving home to start a new career in a foreign country is exciting - but also challenging. To help Mexican caregivers get off to the smoothest possible start in Germany, the Bavarian Red Cross (BRC) launched an online mentoring program together with Volunteer Vision.

THE CHALLENGE

How can new Mexican colleagues be integrated in the best possible way?
In times of a shortage of skilled workers and, above all, nursing staff, Germany is dependent on specialists from abroad. But starting a new career far from home can be a real challenge. Foreign surroundings, foreign language, foreign culture: How can newcomers be helped to start their careers in Germany? This is a question asked by many companies that seek to integrate skilled workers from abroad - including the talent recruiters and developers at BRC. The challenge was to familiarize Mexican colleagues with their new jobs at BRC before they arrived in Germany and to introduce them to the German language and culture. To accomplish this task, the experts were looking for an online tool that would connect BRC employees with their future colleagues from Mexico.

OUR SOLUTION

The BRC online mentoring
Our actions:
Specially adapted language and cultural mentoring program for BRC
Targeted matching of mentor and mentee
Automatic calculation of the time difference between mentor and mentee when coordinating appointments
Development of comprehensive e-learning materials on German language and culture
Issuance of certificates for mentors and mentees
With the help of the online mentoring program, nurses from Mexico can get in touch with experienced BRC employees before they travel to Germany. The aim is to prepare the new colleagues as well as possible for their start in Germany so that they feel welcomed and supported.
Volunteering
"The BRC online mentoring program serves to ideally connect the new foreign employees to the future institution. Through targeted and efficient communication before entering Germany with the help of the mentors, a binding relationship with the mentor is formed. A protected area is created for the exchange of information on operational, cultural, linguistic and also private topics. It appears that our mentees have enjoyed participating in this program and 80% of them recommend it to others! Many tandems continue to exist beyond the digital online program and provide valuable support in the first months of integration."
